PIRA KLE08

Philippines, Sulu Archipelago, overall 81 cm, blade 55.5 cm, hilt 25.5 cm -0502D90-

The Pira is a Klewang with an up-curved extension which protrudes from the hilt. According to Robert Cato in "Moro Swords", it is especially enamored by the Yakan Moros. The shape of the hilt is another fancy variation of the Kakatua, it is said to counter-weight the blade, improving the sword balance.

This example is from the second half of the XX century, the blade is of industrial steel production, however the buffalo horn hilt is graceful with its undulations. The brass ferrule is slightly chiseled with geometric figures at its top and base.
