Aceh is the Northern tip region of Sumatra that first was in contact with Islam while trading with Arab merchants. It remains the hart of strict Islamism and is in constant fight with the central government although animism continues to play an important part in the day-to-day life. The Acehnese live on the province coastline and are an ethnically separate group from the Gayo and Alas people of the highlands. The Acehnese are proud of their culture and are renowned for their swords, daggers and knives.
