Lombok, overall 68 cm, blade 50 cm, hilt 17 cm -0592E160-
Carved hilt representing a symbolized Makara, wood encased with low grade silver mounts and 3 copper rings on the lower half. Single edge, slightly curved, coarsely laminated blade. Wooden sheath encased in the same metal as the hilt. The Sasak are people living in Lombok. They are classified in three categories: the Bodha Sasak who resisted conversion in isolated areas of the North Lombok hinglands, the Wektu Tulu (a syncretic of Islam with traditional Sasak believes) and the Waktu Lima (orthodox Muslims). The Balinese conquest of the island reduced the Sasak to servitude. |
